Social media platform X told the Delhi high court on Friday that notices directing it to block the accounts of the Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF) and the Software Freedom Law Centre (SFLC) had been sent by an imposter and not the Delhi Police. The submission was made before Justice Amit Mahajan, who was hearing petitions filed by IFF and SFLC challenging the notices purportedly issued by the Delhi Police to block their social media handles.X’s counsel told the court that the platform had conducted an internal investigation and found that the notices were sent by an imposter. The counsel also informed the court that X had filed a complaint with the Delhi Police against the person responsible and that the accounts of IFF and SFLC would not be taken down.

“It was an imposter. We have done an internal investigation and it turn out this was an imposter. We have filed a complaint with Delhi Police,” the counsel stated. The court disposed of the petitions after taking note of X’s submission. The matter raised concerns over the alleged misuse of mechanisms for submitting legal and content takedown requests to social media platforms. X has filed a police complaint, seeking an investigation into the identity of the person who sent the purported notices.
