New Delhi: National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) Monday moved SC seeking to absolve it from the court-assigned responsibility of creating infrastructure along 72,000-km network of national highways (NHs) to shelter stray cattle and animals, which are increasingly causing accidents.Seeking an urgent hearing on NHAI’s application, solicitor general Tushar Mehta asked a bench led by CJI Surya Kant to list it before a special bench headed by Justice Vikram Nath, which had directed NHAI to coordinate with states on removal of stray cattle and animals and keeping them in shelters across India alongside NHs. “Neither does the statute cast such a responsibility on NHAI nor does it have the expertise to create shelters across the 72,000-km stretch of NHs and an additional financial burden of Rs 7,000 crore would be imposed on it in creating and managing these shelters,” SG Tushar Mehta said.
