Allahabad HC has sought police reports after conflicting accounts emerged over the accused’s arrest in Jaipur and subsequent encounter in Firozabad

The Allahabad high court has sought reports from senior officers of the Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan Police after conflicting accounts emerged over the arrest of a theft accused from Jaipur and his subsequent involvement in a police encounter in Firozabad, news agency PTI reported.A division bench of Justice Ajay Bhanot and Justice Divesh Kumar Samant passed the order while hearing a writ petition filed by Riya Gautam, wife of the accused, Awadhesh. The court directed the additional director general of police (ADGP), Agra Zone, to file his personal affidavit regarding the encounter and asked the commissioner of police (CP), Jaipur, to submit a report on the arrest.Gautam had alleged that on December 5, 2025, around 10pm, police personnel reached the company in Jaipur where her husband worked and took him away without informing the family. A subsequent Rajasthan Police inquiry stated that Awadhesh was wanted in a theft case registered in Firozabad and that he was later sent to judicial custody there, with Jaipur police personnel accompanying the UP Police team.The high court, however, noted that the Rajasthan Police account was at variance with the FIR. According to the prosecution’s version, an informer had tipped off the police about Awadhesh’s whereabouts in Firozabad, where he and a co-accused were allegedly found near a cold storage.

The FIR states that the accused challenged the police and attacked them with firearms, following which Awadhesh sustained a gunshot injury in the ensuing encounter.The petitioner’s counsel alleged before the court that Awadhesh had been injured in a fake encounter allegedly carried out by police authorities to burnish their credentials. In view of the contrasting accounts, the court directed the ADGP, Agra Zone and CP, Jaipur, to place their reports before it. The order, dated September 2, also directed that a copy be sent to the CP, Jaipur, through the registrar general of the Rajasthan high court. The matter has been listed for September 17.
