NEW DELHI: Governmnet has with immediate effect dissolved its apex decision-making body for telecom and digital communication — digital communications commission (DCC), which was originally established as telecom commission in 1989 before being renamed in 2018.The communication ministry’s dept of telecommunications notified this decision through a Sept 19, 2026, resolution that was published in the Gazette of India, Monday “with effect from the date of publication of this resolution, the DCC shall stand dissolved,” says the gazette.

Decisions for projects upto Rs 100 crore can be taken by the secretary DoT, upto Rs 500 crore by the telecom minister and those above Rs 500 crore to Rs 1,000 were considered by the DCC. Now the same will be referred to the expenditure finance committee, inter-ministerial body under finmin’s dept of expenditure which will evaluate the same before being submitted to the cabinet for formal approval.“The decision was notified last week. DCCA used to have chairman (secretary DoT) and three members. Now that structure will be replaced by an advisor in the ministry. Those changes are being made,” said people aware of the matter.The gazette dissolving DCC traces its history. It was set up as telecom commission in April 1989 to “deal with various aspects relating to the telecommunications sector.” It was re-designated as DCC in October 2018.
