The parents of the deceased medic in the RG Kar hospital rape-murder case have rejected the compensation ruling in the case, insisting they want justice for their daughter.
The comments come after the Sealdah court in Kolkata directed the West Bengal government to pay Rs 17 lakh to the family.

The family further expressed their dissatisfaction with the life imprisonment sentence handed to the convict, Sanjay Roy, who was found guilty of the rape and murder of the on-duty doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024.
“We are shocked. How is this not the rarest of rare cases? An on-duty doctor was raped and murdered. We are dismayed. There was a larger conspiracy behind this crime,” the mother of the victim told news agency PTI.

The parents have called for stricter punishment for Roy, who was sentenced to life imprisonment until death by Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das on Monday.
The judge stated that the crime did not meet the criteria for the “rarest of the rare” category, which would have justified the death penalty. This reasoning has led the family to question the verdict, with the father vowing to continue the fight until all those responsible for the crime are brought to justice.
The court ruling followed extensive investigations by the CBI, which had recommended the death penalty for Roy, citing the brutal nature of the crime. However, Judge Das concluded that the crime did not qualify for the death penalty after considering all the evidence.
The sentence sparked outrage across the country, leading to protests following the murder of the young doctor, which had sent shockwaves throughout India. Security was increased at the court for the sentencing, and the courtroom was packed with public observers on Monday.
Roy, a police volunteer, has denied his involvement in the crime, claiming he was framed, and has expressed intentions to seek clemency. However, the family maintains their stance, demanding a harsher punishment and a broader investigation into the case.
