Left not running inter-faith marriage bureaus: Pinarayi

Published on

KOCHI: Ridiculing the comments made by a prominent Islamic scholar that the CPM, DYFI and SFI were brainwashing Muslim women to marry non-Muslims in the name of promoting secularism, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan said Thursday that the Left organisations were not running “intercaste marriage bureaus“.
He maintained that if a man and woman liked each other and decided to get married irrespective of their faiths, nobody could stop them. There had always been opposition to such unions from one of the families or both sides, but that hadn’t prevented occurrence of such marriages, Vijayan said at a presser in Angamaly.
Speaking at a convention of Sunni Mahallu Federation in Kozhikode on Wednesday, Nazar Faizi Koodathayi, state secretary of Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama Sunni Yuvajana Sangham, had alleged that the CPM and its youth organisations supported “abduction” of Muslim women so as to marry them off to non-Muslim men.
“Some people believe that marriages between Muslim and Hindu community is secularism. They are widely promoting interfaith marriages. Even the party leaders are supporting this and party offices are being used for this. Young Muslim women are being ‘abducted’ with the support of SFI, DYFI and CPM and married off to non-Muslims. Mahallu committees should be vigilant against those trying to destroy the identity of Muslim women, and they should join hands to fight the denouncement of religion,” Koodathayi added.
