NEW DELHI: The Bengal CID on Thursday detained TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee’s PA, Sumit Roy. This came after the Supreme Court rejected Roy’s anticipatory bail plea in the Salboni land scam caseA bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant and comprising Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana also lifted its August 6 order that had protected Roy from arrest, allowing his detention by the Bengal CID.The court heard arguments from senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, representing Roy, and solicitor general Tushar Mehta, appearing for the West Bengal government, before rejecting the plea.Roy had earlier approached the Supreme Court after the Calcutta High Court denied him anticipatory bail on August 3, in the case being investigated by the Salboni police.

The case concerns allegations that West Bengal government land was sold and the proceeds were deposited into the TMC’s account. Roy faces charges relating to cheating, criminal breach of trust, forgery, use of forged documents and criminal conspiracy.The prosecution had opposed interim protection for Roy, arguing that his custodial interrogation was necessary.The high court had also been told that the investigation had uncovered forged title deeds linked to government land. The prosecution alleged that the land was transferred with the involvement of local political leaders and influential persons.
