SC's quota ruling hits opposition's 'appeasement politics': BJP
BJP’sGaurav Bhatialauded the “landmark” ruling

NEW DELHI: BJP Thursday said the SC judgement holding that quota benefits cannot be claimed by converts was “historic”, adding it is a “massive blow to the appeasement politics” of Congress and other opposition parties which have sought to provide reservation to Muslims on the basis of religion. While upholding the Madras HC order that a person converting to Islam can’t claim reservation under backward class category solely on the basis of conversion, SC also held that a person who professes a religion other than Hinduism, Sikhism or Buddhism cannot be considered a member of Scheduled Castes (SC).

BJP’s Gaurav Bhatia lauded the “landmark” ruling, which is a boost to the party’s long-held position that Muslims and Christians cannot claim rights accorded to Dalits because of their SC family background and that OBC reservation cannot be provided on the ground of religion.“The appeasement politics of ‘Congress Jinnah Party’ has got a massive blow after the judgement was delivered,” he said, noting that Congress govts have tried to give backward quota reservation to Muslims. TMC had done the same in Bengal and SP also advocated a similar quota, he added.
