Shimla, March 6

A two-day national seminar on the topic ‘Rethinking the History of Punjab: The Indian Civilisation Context’ was organized at the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies (IIAS). During the seminar, IIAS Prof Ravinder Singh said there was a need to rethink the methodology for studying and interpreting the history of Punjab in a traditional manner.

He critically pointed out the disintegration of Punjab on the basis of language, which led to complete disintegration of tradition from its roots. He also elaborated about the actual identity of Punjab as ‘Sapt Sindhu’.

Singh added, “When we talk about the history of Punjab, we limit our vision to its social and political aspect, but there is a need to think about it in the context of Indian civilisation.” Former Vice-Chancellor of Central University of Himachal Pradesh, Prof Kuldip Chand Agnihotri, also detailed on the geography of Sapt Sindhu.
