‘Six interconnected risk tipping points’: UN report warns of catastrophic consequences

NEW DELHI: The United Nations University – Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) has released a report titled “Interconnected Disaster Risks Report 2023,” which warns of impending risk tipping points with far-reaching consequences for socioecological systems.
Risk tipping points are defined in the report as moments when a socioecological system can no longer buffer risks and provide expected functions, leading to a substantial increase in the risk of catastrophic impacts.
Six Interconnected Risk Tipping Points:
The report identifies six interconnected risk tipping points that could lead to catastrophic impacts: accelerating extinctions, groundwater depletion, mountain glaciers melting, space debris, unbearable heat, and an uninsurable future.
Global Impact on Aquifers:
Groundwater depletion, one of the identified risk tipping points, affects over 2 billion people who rely on underground water reservoirs. Approximately 70% of groundwater withdrawals are used for agriculture, and more than half of the world’s major aquifers are being depleted faster than they can naturally replenish.
Root Causes and Drivers:
The report reveals that these risk tipping points share similar root causes and drivers, primarily stemming from human actions and behaviors that exert pressure on systems until they are on the brink of collapse.
Avoid and Adapt Solutions:
The report proposes a framework for addressing these risk tipping points, offering two categories of solutions: Avoid solutions that target root causes and drivers to prevent risk tipping points, and Adapt solutions that prepare for or address the negative impacts if avoidance is not possible.
Delay and Transform Actions:
Within the Avoid and Adapt solutions, two types of actions are identified. Delay actions aim to slow the progression toward risk tipping points or mitigate their worst impacts within the existing system. Transform actions, however, involve a fundamental reimagining of systems to create more robust and sustainable solutions.
Climate Change Example:
The report cites “Unbearable heat” as a risk tipping point caused by human-induced climate change. An Adapt-Delay solution may involve installing air conditioners to delay the risk tipping point. In contrast, an Avoid-Transform solution seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote low-carbon lifestyles to ultimately avoid the tipping point.
Collective Effort Required:
Transformative change requires the collective effort of society and individuals. The report underscores the importance of global cooperation, particularly in the context of the upcoming UN Climate Conference, as we all play a part in addressing these critical challenges.
