NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi hit out at the BJP, alleging that the governing party is out to get power at any cost and that there is nothing Hindu about their actions.
“I’ve read the ‘Gita‘, I’ve read a number of the Upanishads, I’ve read many Hindu books; there is nothing Hindu about what the BJP does, absolutely nothing,” he said.
From ‘Bharat Jodo’ to global order
During an interaction with students and academics at the Sciences PO University in Paris, covered a broad range of topics such as his ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra‘, the Opposition alliance’s fight to defend India’s democratic structures and changing global order.
He stressed that the Opposition was committed to fighting for the “soul of India” and the country would “come out just fine” from the current “turbulence”.
Right and wrong
It comes at a time when an alliance of all major opposition parties that goes by the name of INDIA – of which the Congress is a constituent – has been preparing to take on the BJP in the 2024 general elections.
In Paris, Rahul Gandhi also asserted that 60% of India voted for the opposition parties while just 40% voted for the ruling party. “So this idea that the majority community is voting for the BJP, this is a wrong idea. The majority community actually vote more for us than they vote for them.”
In Brussels
In a press interaction in Brussels on Friday, Rahul Gandhi spoke about attacks on India’s democratic foundations by the groups in power. He also said that the debate around the country’s name that erupted following the G20 Summit invitations going out in the name of the “President of Bharat” are “panic reactions” and “distraction tactics” by the government.
The bigger picture
Rahul Gandhi on September 5 left for a week-long Europe tour. According to political observers, such tours are part of Rahul’s strategy to brand himself a global leader to counter PM Modi in the 2024 general elections.
