Akhilesh Yadav's Rajya Sabha picks: Samajwadi Party's master strategy or 'PDA' contradiction?
SP chief Akhilesh Yadav has nominated Ram Gopal Yadav and Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani for the Rajya Sabha polls.

A ‘family’ man, a corporate executive, a possible third candidate and a high-stakes numbers game: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav‘s Rajya Sabha strategy has a bit of a test run for the 2027 UP assembly polls? His two picks have an element of continuity and also surprise. But then there is also an element of contradiction vis-à-vis the strong PDA pitch which has been the backbone of his 2027 poll strategy. Little wonder, then, that talk of a third nominee has begun even without the numbers, raising the stakes from a routine Rajya Sabha contest to an early test of Akhilesh’s 2027 strategy. For the two sure-shot Rajya Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav has paired a familiar Samajwadi Party face with a distinctly unfamiliar political profile. Alongside his uncle Ram Gopal Yadav, the SP has nominated Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani, a senior Reliance Industries executive whose father, Parimal Nathwani, is a four-time Rajya Sabha MP backed by the BJP-led NDA. The choice immediately puts two very different images of the SP on the same ticket: its established family name and a corporate, professional profile from outside its traditional ecosystem.Nathwani’s nomination also raises a larger question about the SP’s direction as it prepares for the 2027 assembly election. Is Nathwani’s nomination an attempt to expand the SP’s political appeal beyond its traditional social base, or does bringing a senior corporate executive into Parliament sit uneasily with a party increasingly building its politics for the 2027 polls around PDA, Pichhda, Dalit and Alpsankhyak? The question matters beyond the Rajya Sabha because the SP is simultaneously trying to project itself as the principal challenger to the BJP in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 assembly election.

Why Nathwani?

Akhilesh’s second nomination is more than a surprise name on a candidate list. His corporate background gives the SP an opportunity to make a political argument it has not traditionally foregrounded. The party can present his candidature as evidence that its appeal is extending beyond its conventional political base and that people from the corporate and professional world now see the party as a credible political force. For a party preparing for 2027, that can also help reinforce a broader pitch around investment, jobs, industry and development alongside its social-justice agenda, which could become a significant part of the BJP and Yogi government’s election campaign next year.Akhilesh, in fact, responded to queries over criticism of Nathwani’s nomination by invoking Ram Manohar Lohia. “I think you should read about socialism again. I will give you a book by (Ram Manohar) Lohia,” he said. He argued that socialist thought also talks about prosperity and equality and said governments across the country seek investment to generate economic growth.“This time, it will be Lodhi vs Yogi (Adityanath),” he said on September 30.However, the same choice also produces a very different political reading.Akhilesh’s electoral strategy for the 2027 polls has been heavily identified with PDA, and Nathwani is not an obvious representative of the social coalition that phrase describes. That gives the opposition an opening to question why a party seeking votes in the name of backward classes, Dalits and minorities has chosen a senior corporate executive for one of its two Rajya Sabha seats.Mayawati, in fact, used the same charge against the SP. “SP wants votes in the name of PDA, but makes mostly its own family members and big capitalists MPs and MLAs,” she said in a post on X.State minister and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) president Om Prakash Rajbhar also targeted Akhilesh, accusing him of repeatedly changing the framework for PDA. “Akhilesh Yadav keeps changing the PDA formula from time to time. Yesterday, he came up with the formula of a PDA family. ‘P’ now stands for ‘Parivaar’,” Rajbhar said, referring to Ram Gopal Yadav. “‘D’ stands for the ‘Daulat’, referring to Dhani Ram, who is affluent,” Rajbhar said.“Now, only ‘A’ remains, and he will bring in some criminal to represent it. The new PDA formula stands for ‘Parivaar’, ‘Daulat’ and ‘Apradhi’,” he added. The BJP, meanwhile, is watching Nathwani’s nomination closely but has not mounted a similarly strong direct attack on the choice.

The third nomination suspense

The Uttar Pradesh assembly currently has 396 effective members after seven vacancies, putting the winning quota for a Rajya Sabha seat at 37 first-preference votes. The BJP has 255 MLAs, while the SP has 101 and Congress has two. The BJP’s alliance partners include Apna Dal (S), RLD, SBSP and Nishad Party, giving the ruling camp a substantial numerical advantage. Broadly, the BJP-led camp is positioned to take the larger share of the 10 seats, while the SP-Congress combination has enough strength for two.The problem begins with the third candidate. The SP would need roughly nine additional first-preference votes to reach the quota for a third seat. That means Akhilesh cannot rely only on his existing alliance strength. He would have to attract support from outside it, potentially through smaller parties, independents or legislators willing to cross-vote.The suspense over that third candidate has now become central to the contest. SP MP Virendra Singh has said the party will field a third candidate, with the name to be decided and the nomination filed by October 5. Singh has also claimed that several BJP MLAs seeking SP tickets for the 2027 elections are in touch with the party.Akhilesh, meanwhile, has continued to leave room for political manoeuvring. Earlier in the day he described the Rajya Sabha election as “the time for coming together” and said it offered an opportunity to forget past mistakes and stand united with others on matters of principle.A day earlier, when asked whether the SP would field a third candidate, he declined to confirm the party’s plans and said: “The BJP can do anything. They can field nine or even 10 candidates.”The BJP, meanwhile, has made its own claims about SP legislators. Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya has said that 25 SP MLAs are in contact with the BJP and warned that the party would “surprise” the SP.

A rehearsal for 2027

This Rajya Sabha election, along with the immediate parliamentary tally, will ultimately be about a strategic stress-test for 2027.In fielding Nathwani, Akhilesh Yadav is executing a high-stakes balancing act: attempting to reposition the Samajwadi Party as a pragmatic, investment-friendly government-in-waiting, without alienating the core PDA base that forms its electoral backbone. It is a gamble that risks handing opponents cheap ideological ammunition in exchange for broader institutional credibility and expanded corporate outreach.

Whether this move is remembered as a masterstroke of political expansion or a self-inflicted ideological contradiction will not be decided in the corridors of the Rajya Sabha. It will be decided by how effectively Akhilesh manages the cross-currents – maintaining the confidence of his grassroots voters while proving that his vision for Uttar Pradesh can accommodate both social justice and corporate capital. The upcoming floor vote, and the potential fight for a third seat, will offer the first real glimpse of whether that strategy can hold.
